Cervical screening awareness month

It is cervical screening awareness month.

A cervical smear, now referred to as HPV screening, is important for all people with a cervix.

The HPV screening test is a simple swab, which a practitioner can do, you can self-swab.  The timeframe between tests has also changed, from three years to five years.

The HPV swab checks for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which cause cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. HPV screening is one of the best ways to protect you from cervical cancer.

HPV screening is free if you are:

- Māori / Pacific aged 25-69; or

- over 30 and have not had a cervical screen before; or

- it has been over five years since your last screening.

A nurse or practitioner charge will apply if you are outside of these criteria.

To book an appointment or to check when you are due for your screening test, call us today on 04 389 9955.
