Our history
Newtown Medical Centre stands is a prominent, integrated family health facility located in the heart of Newtown. Started by Dr Childs, it was taken over by Dr. Earl Stevenson-Wright in 1937. After enduring a harrowing period as a prisoner of war for several years, Dr. Stevenson-Wright resolutely returned to his practice in 1946, steadfast in his commitment to healthcare. It wasn't until 1983 that the medical center acquired its enduring title, cementing its place within the community.
Dr. Jill Shepherd, a cornerstone of Newtown Medical Centre, has dedicated over three decades of her expertise and compassionate care. Her enduring presence demonstrates the commitment to continuity and excellence in healthcare that Newtown Medical Centre embodies, fostering trust and reliability among its patients over the years.
About us
Established as a multidisciplinary facility catering to the Newtown community, the center has steadfastly upheld this vision over the years. With a team of clinicians and a diverse array of health professionals collaborating both on and off-site, the center epitomises a spirit of cooperation. Complementing its services is an onsite pharmacy, alongside a roster of visiting specialist services.
Newtown Medical Centre actively engages in training medical students and student nurses, leveraging established partnerships with local universities. This commitment to education ensures a continual influx of skilled professionals into the healthcare landscape.

Health care for our community
We are a Cornerstone accredited integrated family health centre caring for an enrolled population of 10,000 patients, providing a wide range of services, including acute services, minor operations and nurse-led clinics.
Newtown Medical Centre is part of the Health Care Home programme in association with Tu Ora Health Network. The Health Care Home is a model of healthcare that supports general practice to be the health care hub and care co-ordinator for its enrolled patients.
