Cryptosporidium Outbreak in Wellington: What You Need to Know

Wellington is currently experiencing an outbreak of cryptosporidium, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness, with most cases linked to swimming pools and splash pads. Cryptosporidium spreads easily in water and can survive for long periods, making pools a common source of infection.

Symptoms of Cryptosporidium

If you or a family member has been to a public pool or splash pad recently, watch out for these symptoms:
Watery diarrhoea (can last for weeks)
Stomach cramps and pain
Nausea and vomiting
Fever
Dehydration

How to Stop the Spread

To help contain the outbreak, follow these key prevention steps:

Do not swim in a pool until at least 2 weeks after your diarrhoea and symptoms have completely cleared.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially before eating, preparing food, or after using the bathroom—especially if you or someone in your household has been unwell.

Avoid drinking untreated water from lakes, rivers, or pools, as cryptosporidium can survive in untreated water sources.
