Notice of Change to Awanui Lab Service

Awanui Labs has been issued with a strike notice from the APEX union, affecting services from Tuesday, 25 March, to Thursday, 27 March 2025.

As a result, there will be a reduction in laboratory services during these dates.

What This Means for You

Delays Expected: Some Awanui collection centres will remain open, but patients should expect delays.

Possible Closures: Some collection centres may be closed. Please check Awanui Labs’ website for up-to-date information on closures.

Plan Ahead: If possible, we recommend having tests done before or after the strike period to avoid inconvenience.

Hospital Labs Unaffected: Laboratory operations at Wairarapa and Hutt hospitals will continue as usual, except for microbiology services (see below).

Important Notes for Laboratory Testing

Specialist Testing: Immunology flow cytometry tests (e.g., bone marrow and biopsy testing) should be rescheduled unless urgent. A haematologist's approval is required for any urgent specialist testing.

Microbiology Services: During the strike, samples without clinical details may not be processed. Routine samples without an indication of treatment failure may be discarded if testing volumes exceed staff capacity.

What You Should Do

Check Before You Visit: Visit Awanui Labs’ website to confirm collection centre availability.

Allow Extra Time: If your test is urgent, prepare for potential delays at open centres.

Speak to Your Doctor: If you have concerns about getting your tests done, consult your doctor for advice.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience as Awanui Labs works to manage the impact of this industrial action.
